The goal of this course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the systems in a vehicle. After taking the course, each student should be capable of effectively maintaining their car and completing basic repairs. These skills will potentially save students thousands of dollars over their lifetime. The course is 70% practical and 30% theoretical work. To participate in this course, it is not necessary to own or provide a vehicle.
Topics covered include:
- Considerations in purchasing a vehicle
- Introduction to automotive maintenance including lubrication, cooling, fuel, ignition and brake systems
- Engine design and operation of: 2 and 4 strokes, rotary and diesel
- General maintenance that can be performed in your own driveway
- Introduction to suspension systems
- Wheel and brake service
If a student has taken Mechanics in a previous grade, student will be tasked with taking on more complex vehicle jobs.
If a student would like to take on a large car repair project, it should be discussed with instructor before enrollment.
