This course is designed to allow students an opportunity to explore their world and look through a lens that encompasses a wider variety of views than have become common to the positive feedback loops that are the new norm. Working individually, in pairs, and in larger groups, students will be asked to raise a particular point of view – using a variety of sources – and then to counter that argument. Debating, persuasive speaking, and working in conference setting (such as Model United Nations assemblies) are three of the five strands the students will be asked to complete. The other two strands have students speaking to entertain and inform through role playing (readers’ theatre, after dinner speaking, and dramatic monologues or dialogues are all possibilities, as is running a mock trial (either a historical mock-up or a criminal case).
