Grade 9 students who speak Spanish at home should register in Spanish 10. Students with prior school experience of Spanish should contact Mrs. Moss or Ms. Green to discuss appropriate Spanish placement.
Spanish 9 is a course for students with no previous or minimal knowledge of Spanish. This course is conducted using Comprehensible Input techniques, such as TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), PQA (Personalized Q&A), Special Person Interviews and Calendar Talk. Emphasis is on providing students a variety of comprehensible input in Spanish that is interesting to them. Listening and reading activities are emphasized throughout the year, with speaking and simple writing activities added once students have acquired enough Spanish proficiency. Culture is emphasized through mini-units relating to various festivals in the Spanish-speaking world, as well as through Spanish-language music and film. This is a course where regular attendance and active participation are essential for maximum language acquisition. Grading is proficiency based, emphasizing what students are able to do with the Spanish language within the topics used in class. Minimal homework is assigned for this course.
