PHE Active Living 12 (Dual Credit)

This course is a partnership between Oak Bay Secondary (SD #61) and Camosun College. The purpose of this course is for students to gain post-secondary credits and experience while still in high school. This particular course is a combination of Oak Bay’s Active Living 12 and Camosun College’s Kinesiology 120 course.

In Active Living Dual Credit, students will study basic fitness principles to explore the ways in which fitness training and lifestyle behaviours impact health and wellness in a range of populations and various cultures within Canada.  Behaviour change and goal setting will also be explored as the students study a series of fitness and wellness components.  Students will also learn and practice a range of practical basic physical fitness and exercise training methods and techniques.  In addition, students will participate in a variety of sports, games, and activities in a traditional PE atmosphere.  Occasional field trips to experience community based programs are also an exciting offering of this course!

This course will be team-taught with an instructor from Camosun College and a teacher from Oak Bay within one block of the timetable.  A Camosun instructor will present 42 hours of lecture material during class time (and supported with Camosun’s D2L website), deliver laboratory sessions and assess student work.  An Oak Bay teacher will provide support for the Kinesiology 120 curriculum, assignments, and labs as well as facilitate PE activities.  This dual credit course is perfect for students pursuing interests in Exercises Science, Recreation, Physical Education, Health Sciences, and Sport Management.

By taking this course students will receive 8 high school credits and 4 college/university credits.  These 8 credits can be earned in the same length of time it takes to take a traditional 4 credit course at Oak Bay.  The Kinesiology 120 course credits are transferable to UVic, UBC, SFU, VIU, UNBC, and most other B.C. colleges and Canadian Universities. Check the BC Transfer Guide website for other transferable post secondary institutions.  Other than the potential cost of a textbook and a small registration fee, the Camosun Dual Credits come at NO TUITION CHARGE!  There is a small Camosun College Application Fee of $45.00 and students may be responsible for purchasing a textbook.  International students have a course fee of $500.

There is an application process once you select this course for 2022/23.

NOTE: Students who wish to register for a dual credit course will need to meet with a Careers advisor for the application package, and will need to meet with an Academic Counselor to ensure their career choice aligns with the dual credit course transition pathway. Documentation will need to be provided in the application outlining that the dual credit course is required for the career that the student wishes to pursue.
