Math: Pre Calculus 12

PRE-CALCULUS 12 (1 Course)

Grade 12

Prerequisite: A final grade of 60% or higher in Pre-Calculus 11 is strongly recommended. Students with less than 60% should consult with their teacher before choosing this course.

Equipment: Scientific Calculator: The Sharp EL – 510R is most suitable.

Information: This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus. This might include Mathematics, Sciences, Engineering, and Commerce. The course will include Operations, Composition, and Transformations of Functions, Graph and Analyze – Exponential, Logarithm, Polynomial, Radical, Rational and Sinusoidal Functions as well as Conic Sections. Solve Trigonometric Equations and prove Trigonometric Identities. This course can be taken concurrently with any of the other Math 12 courses.

It is recommended that students who enrol in Pre-Calculus 12 also take Calculus 12 by taking the PC12 Calc 12 Combo.

Post Secondary Considerations:  If there is a chance you will be taking a calculus related course in post secondary, you will want to take calculus 12 in high school.

What couse should you take if you complete math 12 in grade 11?

Option 1:  Enrol in PC12 / Calc 12 Combo:  This takes 2 blocks and spans September to June.  Calculus and PC 12 are woven together throughout the year. For example, the first month we will focus on math 12, and then we will focus on calc 12 for a few months, and then we will go back to math 12 again.  This gives students who have already completed math 12 a spare, a certain time of the combo course. These students may choose to take a spare during this time or to be  teaching assistants within the class(TA credits, volunteer hours or reference letters.)  The advantage of the combo is that you get MORE time to think about the content and the competencies.  Students are working with the same group of peers for the entire year, which leads to deeper connections between students.

Option 2: Enrol in Calc 12 Only:     This allows students who take math 12 in semester 1 who were not planning on taking calculus, the chance to change their mind and take this awesome course.   It also allows students who complete math 12 in grade 11 to take a stand-alone course without need to sign up for the combo.  This course will likely be offered in second semester.  If you are not sure what course to take, we recommend the Combo course.  If you decide halfway through the year that you do not want to complete Calc 12, that is not a problem.  You can drop calc 12 and continue in math 12 inside the combo course.

If you know want to take Calc in your grade 12 year, please enrol in the combo.  This ensures you get the calculus class you need.  If you decide halfway through “Math 12 only” that you want to take Calc 12, sign up asap as space in the stand alone “Calc 12 Only” will be limited.  To be safe if you know you want calc 12, sign up for combo at the beginning of the year and take math 12 and calc 12 in teh combo course.
