Études Autochtones Contemporaines/Contemporary Indigenous Studies 11/12 (FRENCH IMMERSION)

Welcome to this dynamic and interactive course where students go on several field trips: to beaches, forests and creeks, listen to guests and Elders, cook food together, and share ideas in the community. Students participate in games, discussions, inquiry, and group projects, while using creative and critical thinking competencies to explore ideas and artefacts. This course is rooted in storytelling in all its forms – music, dance, oral tradition, art, mapmaking, poetry. Students also have an opportunity to share and explore their own personal stories, as we learn alongside each other.

This course satisfies the Indigenous-Focused graduation requirement. At the same time, students who take this course will receive their Socials credit at the grade 12 level for the French immersion Double Dogwood Diploma (and will meet the university admission requirements). In addition, students in grade 11 can take this course in their grade 11 year. By the end of this course, students will be ready to take a university-level course in Social Studies and to enter the world after high school as active, informed citizens who can think critically.

This course delves into the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contemporary issues facing Indigenous peoples in Canada and around the world. This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the contributions, resilience, and challenges experienced by Indigenous communities, fostering appreciation for their profound cultural heritage and knowledge. At the same time, students explore Indigenous worldviews in authentic ways that uphold the First Peoples Principles of Learning.
