Studio Arts 2D 11 — Course Description
Studio Arts 2D 11 is an introductory senior-level visual arts course where you will explore and create two-dimensional art—like drawing and painting—using a wide range of materials, tools, techniques, and creative ideas. In this class, you will learn to express your personal voice, develop your artistic skills, and think like an artist. This course is designed for students who are ready to take ownership of their learning and work independently as artists. Students must complete all project work during scheduled class time, as this course does not offer online or distance learning options.
A key focus of this course is personal responsibility. Students are expected to manage their time, materials, and workspace responsibly, set personal goals, and follow projects from planning through completion. Emphasis is placed on sustained effort, reflective practice, and accountability for learning decisions.
Student choice plays a central role. Students select themes, materials, and approaches that align with their interests while meeting course criteria. Through experimentation and creative risk-taking, students refine ideas and develop meaningful, intentional artwork.
Peer mentorship and collaboration are integral to the learning environment. Students engage in critiques, discussions, and shared problem-solving, offering constructive feedback and supporting one another’s growth. Senior students are encouraged to model strong studio habits, leadership, and respect for diverse perspectives.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio that demonstrates technical skill, conceptual depth, independence, and readiness for post-secondary art studies or creative pathways.
You will:
-
Create original artwork using sensory inspiration, imagination, and curiosity.
-
Experiment with materials and techniques such as pencils, charcoal, ink, watercolour, acrylics, oil paint and more.
-
Take creative risks and learn how trial, error, and refinement help strengthen your artistic ideas.
-
Reflect on your choices and process by talking about and writing about your art.

Practice studio habits that support safety, respect for materials, and personal responsibility.
This course is designed to help you think creatively, communicate visually, connect art with your life and the world around you, and build the confidence to develop your own artistic style.
