AP Studio Art 2D (AP2D) – Course Description
AP Studio Art 2D (AP2D) is a year-long, advanced art course for students who want to develop a strong portfolio and prepare for university-level art study. The course focuses on building a high-quality body of work, developing a personal style, and learning how to present and explain your art professionally. The last 6 weeks of the course provide the opportunity to work collaboratively on schools murals with a focus on careers in Visual Arts; giving students real life knowledge, skills and experience to step out of high school and begin working as an artist in their community.
To ensure students are ready for the demands of AP2D, students are required to sign up for two courses:
This course prepares students for the AP Studio Art 2D experience by strengthening technical skills, creative decision-making, and independent work habits. Students explore advanced materials and processes, develop personal themes, and learn how to build a strong portfolio through sustained effort and reflection.
In AP2D, students work independently to create a portfolio that demonstrates artistic growth, creative risk-taking, and technical excellence. Students are expected to manage their time, set goals, and produce a consistent body of work. The course emphasizes student choice, personal responsibility, and professional presentation, including written reflections and artist statements.
