AP (Advanced Placement) 2D Design Portfolio

AP Studio Art 2D (AP2D) – Course Description

AP Studio Art 2D (AP2D) is a year-long, advanced art course for students who want to develop a strong portfolio and prepare for university-level art study. The course focuses on building a high-quality body of work, developing a personal style, and learning how to present and explain your art professionally.  The last 6 weeks of the course provide the opportunity to work collaboratively on schools murals with a focus on careers in Visual Arts; giving students real life knowledge, skills and experience to step out of high school and begin working as an artist in their community.

Two-Class Pathway (Required)

To ensure students are ready for the demands of AP2D, students are required to sign up for two courses:

1. Pre-AP – Studio Art 12 (Prerequisite) Fall
This course prepares students for the AP Studio Art 2D experience by strengthening technical skills, creative decision-making, and independent work habits. Students explore advanced materials and processes, develop personal themes, and learn how to build a strong portfolio through sustained effort and reflection.
2. AP Studio Art 2D (AP2D) Spring
In AP2D, students work independently to create a portfolio that demonstrates artistic growth, creative risk-taking, and technical excellence. Students are expected to manage their time, set goals, and produce a consistent body of work. The course emphasizes student choicepersonal responsibility, and professional presentation, including written reflections and artist statements.
